Faculty Dining Room

The Faculty Dining Room is where members of the UP Law Faculty are served meals and where brownbag sessions on special topics are also held. At the adjacent area is the cafeteria being served by Cravings as the concessionaire.
The Faculty Dining Room houses several notable portraits of Supreme Court Justices.

1 The Philippine Supreme Court in 1935

-This painting was made by Florentino “Fred” Gavia Macabuhay (1908–1977) depicts the members of the Supreme Court in 1935. They are Anacleto Diaz, George Butte, James C. Vickers, Carlos A. Imperial, Leonard S. Goddard, Claro M. Recto, Jose Abad Santos, George Malcolm, Ramon Avanceña, Antonio C. Villareal, and John A. Hull.

-Fred Macabuhay was a Filipino painter and illustrator from Lumban, Laguna, recognized for his contributions to the classical tradition of Philippine art. He is most frequently associated with the Amorsolo School, a group of artists who followed the romanticized, sun-drenched style of National Artist Fernando Amorsolo.

2 Ramon Avancena

-This painting was made by Benjamin “Ben” Alano of Taguig, and UP Fine Arts (graduated 1948). Alano excelled in old school realism and was also a protegee of Fernando Amorsolo

3 Jose Abad Santos

-This was painted by Dominador Castaneda in 1953. Castaneda was former director (1955-1962) of the UP School of Fine Arts

4 Manuel Araullo

-This painting is another one of Ben Alano

5 Justice Cayetano Arellano

These portraits used to hang on the second floor of the Law Library in the 1990s and 2000s. The second floor of the Law Library is now called the Learning Commons. In the late 2010s, the floors of Espiritu Hall were renumbered to align with Malcolm Hall (versus Bocobo Hall).
